NGÀY XUÂN DẠY CÁC CON

 Năm mới vừa sang, năm cũ qua
Tuy nghèo, ta vẫn mến nhà ta.
Chín sào tư thổ là nơi ở,
Một bó tàn thư ấy nghiệp nhà.
Trước cửa khói dày non khuất bóng,
Bên tường, mưa ít, cúc thưa hoa.
Các con nối chí cha nên biết:
Nghiên bút đừng quên lúa, đậu, cà.

The old year fades, the new year’s here;
Though poor, we love our homestead dear.
Nine sào of ancestral soil we own,
A bundle of worn books—our heirloom lone.

Before the gate, thick smoke veils the hill;
By the wall, sparse rain, chrysanthemums still.
My children, if you would fulfill my will:
Hold fast the brush—but tend rice and beans still.
